SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's new coronavirus cases fell below 20,000 on Sunday, just a day ahead of the country's planned lifting of a mask mandate for indoor places that has been in place for more than three years. The country reported 18,871 new cases, including 37 from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 30,149,601, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). Starting Monday, people will be allowed to visit most places, including schools, kindergartens and gyms, without masks, as the government plans to lift the mandate that has been in force since October 2020.

The total value of wine imported by South Korea last year came to US$581.2 million, according to the data compiled by the Korea Customs Service, after hovering above the $500 million level for the first time in 2021. Market watchers said the increase in the consumption of wine came as the prolonged pandemic has led people to consume alcoholic beverages at home.

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- Elizabeth Salmon, the U.N. special rapporteur for North Korea's human rights, will visit South Korea next week, diplomatic sources here said Saturday. The sources said Salmon will be here for about five days from Sunday to attend a conference on North Korean human rights and meet related activist groups. During the conference on Monday and Tuesday, she will speak about the situation of human rights of women and children in the communist country and host a session.
